This is the first in a series of three clips that I consider to be the all time best warp drive sequences from Star Trek : The Next Generation. ( the TV series ) All 3 clips are taken from Season 1, Episode 6 : “Where No One Has Gone Before.” Note : Append ‘&fmt=18′ to the video URL if you want high quality stereo mode.
In Voyager, I’ve no idea which episode, they reach Warp 10, and travel at infinite velocity, occupying every space in the universe. What’s up with that?
cool they are traveling thorugh galaxies like so fast
@oprotheroe thats the episode where janeway and paris went infinite velocity and travel back in time or something where they were like catfish or some sort of slug and janeway had paris’s baby causing evolution…. i don’t know, that’s what i remember….
This is funny because he said they never exceeded warp 1.5, but here he says they were off the scale LOLZ
@IRONMAIDENFAN2006 “bullshit, I order you, stooooooooooppp, woooooooooooooow” slam.
What speed were they going. What is past warp speed 10? I saw this episode it’s a great episode shows the william crusher has potental
lulz at all the stargaze fans trying to point out flaws in the dialogue. Go watch futurama, we’ll handle the srs stuff.
Way too much filtering! The blu-ray edition for this series should be awesome when it comes out. I hope they do the touch-ups to the special effects, like they did for the Original Series ^_^
@starsfandub “Way too much filtering!” How so? The raw MPEG-PS data from the DVDs is horribly noisy, badly interlaced and has major contrast and color problems. I had to construct a huge filter chain with mencoder to get rid of the above crap and make it pleasant to view. The transcoded version here is 1000x the quality of the original.
@starsfandub “The blu-ray edition for this series should be awesome when it comes out.” Don’t count on it. The source material was not filmed at usual cinema resolution — It wasn’t even filmed in widescreen to the best of my knowledge. I don’t even think that TNG was filmed using cinema quality cameras/film and I do not think that it was filmed at a 16:9 or 21:9 aspect ratio.
@jdbtwo It does look a lot better than the DVD releases, but everyone’s faces look plastic coz you’ve taken out too much of the original detail. I do give you thumbs up for cleaning it up, but it has gotten rid of the important film grain – which is intended. Was fun to watch ^_^
@starsfandub The “film grain” that you describe in just an incredibly craptastic amount of noise. Unfortunately, the “plastic” quality is an artifact of the HQDN3D filter which causes slight ghosting. At the time I hadn’t figured out how to get rid of it or counteract it — may have been a bug in the filter itself.
@jdbtwo Have you seen the ‘Original Series’ blu-ray release? For something that was filmed in the 60s, it looks bloody amazing! TNG will be in 4:3 but will still be 1080p Things don’t have to be wide-screen to be put on blu-ray ^_^ they just have the black bars built into the image. You will be seeing exactly what was filmed, and a much higher resolution. The source material was filmed on 35mm motion picture film, so I believe Paramount will have no dramas bringing it to HD for all to enjoy.
@jdbtwo Heh, just an afterthought, but isn’t Data’s face supposed to look “plastic” anyway?
( Oh, and in the parent post : s/describe in/describe is/
)
@starsfandub “TNG will be in 4:3 but will still be 1080p Things don’t have to be wide-screen to be put on blu-ray”I know that, it’s just that the normal “HD” tag usually doesn’t apply to something that is 720×1080
. As for Blu-Ray, it’s just a physical medium combined with low level error correction and encoding which on top sits a filesystem where the content, usually encoded video, is encrypted using AACS and BD+ although AnyDVD can take care of that.
It’s just a data storage medium.
@jdbtwo It will still be in 1920x1080p. Unlike DVD where the file is just the actual video. With blu-ray, the black bars on the side are actually built into the rendering process. Anyways, Paramount have spoke about the blu-ray release and they are making sure they don’t ruin the look of it before producing it on blu-ray. Either way, when it is released one day, it’s gonna look awesome ^_^
WOW ! What episode is this ?!
@davisgreen2020 Season 1 // Episode 6 “Where No One Has Gone Before”
if they’d have got stuck out there…and they thought Voyager had it bad.
This waz so awesome. I loved the Traveler. Such cool effects.
Bring Back Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek 12. Without Patrick Stewart the Next Generation would never have worked. The Trek Saga is not complete without the Next Generation. After all, the Trek Reboot last year brought the Technology of the 24Th Century back in time to Captain Pike,Captain Kirk and Mr.Spock. We need a friendly wink from Jean-Luc Picard.
This is my favorite episode. I think it would have been a great 2 hour film. My favourite part is Captain Picard talking to his Mamaw, who is giving him some insight into their situation, “Is this what you see as the end of the Universe? Or do you see it as the beginning?”…along with strong, hot cup of tea. I don’t know why, but it always makes me tear up. And yes, the effects are excellent
This is episode 6 “Where No One Has Gone Before”
@starsfandub nice. but I imagine all the effects were done in SD?
or are they all optical effects..
it’ll be cool to see if some of the text decals with gibberish on are now readable
season one was the best for action, got a bit placid afterwards when Berman took the helm. I love this sequence, the full potential of 1987, not just the enterprise’s motors.
